Vladivostok seaport will become the base port of the Northern Sea Route

It is expected to at least double the volume of cargo transported by 2025.

This will require billions of rubles of investment.

The Vladivostok Commercial Sea Port has existed since 1897. All this time, he was the main enterprise of the city of Vladivostok.

And in 2020, VMTP came out on top in the country in terms of container traffic (672 thousand containers).

As the general director of the port, Vladimir Korchanov, noted, one of the main reasons for such a successful development of the port is that the management has long understood the importance and relevance of container transportation.

Therefore, since 2011, more and more emphasis has been placed on them. For this, the port had to be substantially re-equipped: to purchase special truck cranes, to rebuild many technological processes.

The main advantage of containers is their versatility , notes Vladimir Korchagin.

Everything is transported in containers, including grain and food. In addition, containers are easy to transfer from ships to cars, from railway wagons to ships. This greatly speeds up and simplifies logistics.

The Northern Sea Route is a profitable trade direction

If VMTP becomes the base port of the Northern Sea Route, this means that it will carry out massive transshipment of goods from China, Korea, Japan, which will subsequently go to Europe via Murmansk, which may require escort of icebreakers.

The Northern Sea Route is a profitable alternative to the transportation of goods through the Suez Canal: the route is several thousand kilometers shorter, there are practically no restrictions on throughput.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has set a task to increase the volume of cargo transported through the Northern Sea Route by 2025 from 33 million tons to 80 million tons.

This is a very ambitious task that will take a lot of effort to achieve. And first of all, to ensure additional development of the Vladivostok port.

“To implement such a large-scale project, completely different capacities are needed. Shareholders approved the investment program; by 2025, VMTP is to double the handling of containerized cargo. And this implies the development of production facilities, and the purchase of new equipment, and the introduction of information technology. We are talking about billions of rubles, ”said Vladimir Korchanov.

It is planned that the expansion of the port will stimulate the development of the city of Vladivostok.

Including — new sports and cultural institutions will appear.

After all, the city largely depends on the port: the latter pays about 3 billion rubles in taxes annually.

And after the expansion, this amount will become even larger, giving the city new opportunities.
