Romania harvested a record 11.3 million tons of wheat

The country has been competing with Russia for many years in the tenders of GASC (Egyptian state agency for grain purchases).

After a dry 2020, when Romania harvested only 6.4 million tonnes of wheat, farmers have expanded their wheat sowing.

The weather favored a good harvest: the winter in the country was mild, and the soil retained a sufficient level of moisture.

All this contributed to a sharp recovery in indicators: as of August 16, 11.3 million tons of wheat were harvested with an average yield of 5.35 centners per hectare (in 2020, the average yield was 2.99 centners per hectare).

For the first half of 2021, Romania exported 8,239 million tons of cereals, of which wheat — 2,219 million tons.

Egypt is in second place: 925 thousand tons.

Iran is in third place: 684 thousand tons.

Since the beginning of the new 2021/22 marketing season among the EU countries, Romania has become the leading exporter of soft wheat and feed barley.

The country supplies wheat to the Middle East, and Egypt is the main buyer and importer of Romanian wheat.

The export potential of Romania in 2021/22 is estimated at 7 million tons, domestic consumption: 2.5-3 million tons.

Experts believe that a good harvest can increase the competitiveness of Romanian wheat in the world market.
