According to statistics, in 2020 Russia harvested up to 2.8 million tons of rapeseed (+ 21% compared to last year).
This season it is planned to harvest up to 2.96 million tons of this crop.
Rape is one of the most important crops. It is grown for seeds, as well as for meal and cake, for oil.
Rapeseed production in Russia is growing rapidly. In addition to the collection volumes, this can be seen in a number of other parameters.
Sown area
In 2021, 1.682 million hectares were planted with rapeseed. This is 13% more than a year earlier.
If we take a long perspective, then:
For 5 years, the area under rapeseed has increased by 72%.
For 10 years — by 88%.
Over 15 years — 3.3 times.
It is interesting that this season the entire increase in acreage was achieved due to spring rapeseed (+225 thousand hectares, which is + 19%). The area under winter rapeseed even decreased: -31 thousand hectares, which is -10%.
Import of rapeseed to the Russian Federation
He has grown considerably. For example, 5 thousand tons of seeds were imported for the whole of 2020, and 7 thousand tons for the first half of this year.
At the same time, Russia managed to save on supplies. If earlier rapeseeds were imported mainly from Europe (Germany, France), now Kazakhstan is successfully acting as a cheaper supplier.
Rapeseed oil
According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), in 2020 it was produced 22% more than a year earlier. Production growth amounted to 136 thousand tons (total 752 thousand tons).
It is planned that up to 771 thousand tons of oil will be produced from this year’s harvest. This is approximately + 2.5% to last year’s volume.
It is also planned to expand the export of rapeseed oil, which is growing from year to year.
For example, in 2020 it amounted to 686 thousand tons, which is + 3% by 2019. For the first half of this year, the volume of oil exports amounted to 338 thousand tons.
And this is 17% more than in the same period of the previous year. Therefore, there is every chance to show a new record in terms of annual turnover.
In the long term, oil exports are actively growing, and in physical terms, not in monetary terms:
For 5 years — 2.6 times.
For 10 years — 6.9 times.
For 15 years — 120 times.
Oilcake and meal
In addition, the production of oilseed meal and rapeseed cake is actively growing. In 2020, this volume was about 1.13 million tons.
It is planned that this year this record will also be broken by at least 2.7%. The projected harvest of rapeseed cake and meal is 1.160 million tons.
At the same time, from July 2020 to July 2021, rapeseed prices have doubled. Therefore, farmers are motivated to further develop the cultivation of this crop.
