Russia expands pea production

In recent years, Russia has shown steady growth in the cultivation of peas. This applies to almost all indicators.

According to research carried out by the analytical center AB-Center, in the current season, peas have grown in Russia.

The total amount collected was 2.94 million tonnes . This is 200 thousand tons or 7.3% more than in the previous season.

This growth is largely due to the expansion of cultivated areas. They grew to 1,445 thousand hectares, an increase of 10%, which is a significant amount.

Imports of pea seeds from Germany and Hungary have grown slightly . In January-July 2021, Russia increased the import of seeds by 7.4%.

It is noteworthy that in 2020, compared to 2019, imports grew by 49.5% at once.

As for the average annual yield , it is kept at a stable and fairly high level: 20.8 centners per hectare.

In Russia, more than half of the regions are engaged in pea cultivation. But their contribution to the production of this culture is very different. On the territory of the country, at least 37 regions produce from 10 thousand tons of peas per year, of which 10 regions produce over 100 thousand tons per year.

The Stavropol Territory is in the first place in the cultivation of peas: 12.2%.

At the same time, the top 5 regions on the list give a total of 40% of all Russian peas, and the top 10 already produce 63.5% of peas.

Finally, yield increases are also taking place.

In the period 1991-2000. about 11.5 centners of peas were harvested per hectare,

in 2001-2010 — 16.7 centners,

in 2011-2020 — 18.6 centners.

Therefore, there is every reason to talk about consistent growth.

Will Russia be a global pea exporter?

& nbsp;

At the moment, she already has this title. In terms of the volume of peas sent abroad, the Russian Federation is second only to one country — Canada.

The share of Russia in the world pea market is now 10.7%. This is significantly more than 10 years ago — 3.3%, and even more than 15 years ago — 2.3%.

For example, in 2020, exports amounted to 713 thousand tons, which is almost 20% more than a year earlier.

In January-July 2021, Russia exported 431 thousand tons of peas, which is 39.4% more than in the same period in 2020.

Spain.

Currently, it is planned to further expand the production of peas in Russia. After all, the demand for it is growing, and over the past 10 years the world pea market has grown by almost 1.5 times.

Prices are also growing, which will certainly stimulate farmers to continue sowing more and more areas with peas.
