Agricultural insurers prepare for climate change

The current state of the industry was discussed at the International Association of Agricultural Insurers (A IAG).

According to the information announced at the general meeting of the association, climatic instability today is becoming one of the factors that comes first in terms of importance.

Suffice it to recall the situation in the last season, when only in two European countries — France and Italy — the financial damage from frost and drought amounted to more than 3 billion euros.

Many other European countries have faced similar challenges.

Moreover, this is not only a matter of Europe.

Climate instability is becoming a common threat, it is also typical for North and Latin America and China.

Scientists predict that the average temperature on the planet will rise every year, and this process is almost irreversible. In the next 2-3 decades, it can grow by 2 degrees Celsius.

This forces agricultural insurers to think about the consequences and how to change their activities taking into account the new realities.

As it was noted during the meeting, today the agricultural industry is actively developing, which is facilitated by the increasing demand for food in the world, as well as rising prices for most of the goods in this sector.

However, at the same time, reinsurers are worried about climate change causing new risks that no one wants to take on at the moment.

After all, potential losses from the realization of climatic risks can be much greater than with the onset of standard insured events.

At the same time, practically all the risks that were discussed at the meeting are relevant for Russia as well. She has also experienced full this season, for example, the drought in the southern regions, which led to a significant reduction in the total harvest.

“The Russian agricultural insurance market should correspond to the position of the country’s agro-industrial complex on the world stage.

Russian agricultural insurance today is not just developing — an innovative way has been chosen in our country, which makes it possible to increase efficiency and strengthen the protection of farmers with the help of insurance in case of emergencies, «says the President of the National Union of Agricultural Insurers Korney Bizhdov.

A landmark event at this meeting was the entry of a representative of China into the board of directors (AIAG).

This is a consequence of the growing role of China in the global agricultural insurance market. According to the latest estimates, its share in this market may be up to 30%.

The main trend today is that all countries will have to modernize and rebuild their agricultural insurance systems in accordance with new challenges.

But how exactly to do this in each specific country is still a vast field for discussion.
