Export of peas is growing in Russia

Over the past decades, the export of peas from Russia has grown several times and continues to grow.

According to a study by the analytical center of agribusiness AB-Center, in 2020 Russia sold 713 thousand tons of peas abroad.

This is 20% more than a year earlier — in 2019. And if we take the last 5 years, then we also see a steady growth in pea exports by 21%.

If we take a longer time period, for example, 10 years, then we will see even more impressive results.

Since 2011, pea exports from Russia have increased by 370%.

And in comparison with 2001, the growth is even more noticeable: at that time, the annual export of peas from Russia amounted to only 19 thousand tons.

That is, we are talking about an increase in the exported volumes of this crop by more than 37 times.

Which countries buy Russian peas?

 

First of all, this is Pakistan. At the end of 2020, its share was 22%.

He purchased 159 thousand tons of peas. Italy bought 115 thousand tons, which is 16%.

The following states are also on the list of importers of Russian peas:

Turkey.

Spain.

Latvia.

Bangladesh.

Denmark.

Netherlands.

United Arab Emirates.

Nepal.

In total, these 10 countries buy more than 90% of Russian peas.

How much are Russian peas today?

 

Recently, its price has been showing growth. And if in 2020 it was possible to speak of moderate growth, then in 2021 it became more tangible.

In 2020, peas were exported at prices of about $ 239 per tonne (average statistical value), which was an increase of 3.8% by 2019. At the same time, different countries bought Russian peas at different prices:

Netherlands — $ 300 per ton.

Bangladesh — $ 280 per ton.

Spain — $ 215 per ton.

Latvia — $ 220 per ton.

By now, prices have increased even more.

In January-July 2021, the average price for a ton of exported peas was already $ 317, which is about 30% more expensive than a year earlier.

At the same time, prices for different buyers were also not the same:

Netherlands — $ 375 per tonne.

Pakistan — $ 364 per ton.

Bangladesh and the UAE — $ 330 per ton.

Denmark — $ 260 per ton.

Latvia — $ 270 per ton.

Turkey — $ 300 per ton.

Today, peas account for about 70% of the production of pulses in Russia.

The plans also include entering the Chinese market.

“Russian peas meet all the requirements of the Chinese side specified in the specifications. Our advantage is a short logistic leverage and, accordingly, more competitive pricing, ”says the head of the Union of Grain Exporters Eduard Zernin.
