Corn production is developing in Russia

Over the past 20 years, corn production, its exports, and domestic consumption have increased significantly in the Russian Federation.

According to statistics, in the period 2017-2021. the average annual harvest of corn amounted to 13.5 million tons. The export volume is 4.2 million tons.

Domestic consumption is at the level of 9.3 million tons.

It is important that at the same time Russia is fully self-sufficient in this type of agricultural products: the level of self-sufficiency is 145.2%.

The development of animal husbandry is the main factor in the growth of the popularity of corn

The expansion of the corn market in Russia is highly dependent on the state of the livestock industry.

At the moment, the food share in corn consumption is 1.1 million tons, while feed — 9.8 million tons. That is, most of all corn consumed in the Russian Federation ends up as livestock feed.

If we compare with the situation that was 10 years ago, the difference is noticeable: then 700 thousand tons of corn per year were used for food needs, about 4 million tons for feed.

Russia expands corn crops

Over the past 3 years, the sown area under corn has increased by about 4%: by 118 thousand hectares.

This trend is largely due to the fact that now there is a trend of rising world prices for this type of agricultural products.

As a result, producers become interested in the production of corn, and they increase the acreage under it.

Which countries does Russia export corn to?

According to data for the second quarter of 2021, South Korea is in first place (35%), followed by Turkey (18%), Vietnam (14%), Italy (about 10%), Greece and Libya (5% each), Israel (about 3%).

At the same time, during the specified period, corn exports amounted to about $200 million.

Compared with the second quarter of 2020, exports in monetary terms decreased by 10%, but in kind — by 40%.

That is, due to high prices, it was possible to maintain almost the same amount of income, while almost halving the volumes supplied abroad.

In general, in January-October 2021, Russia exported 3.2 million tons of corn. And this is 7% more than in the same period last year, in physical terms.

If we talk about the cost of sales, then it increased by 42% and amounted to 759 million dollars.

According to analysts, today Russia is in the top 10 world suppliers of corn. It has turned from an importer into an exporter of this crop for a long time: back in 2009.
