Russia expects a record for the collection of oilseeds

Experts note an increase in the yield of winter and spring rapeseed and sunflower in the southern regions.

Analysts predict the harvest of oilseeds in Russia at the level of 25 million tons — this is a new record (23 million tons were harvested in 2021).

In the plans of farmers to collect:

Sunflower — more than 16 million tons

Soybeans – almost 4.8 million tons

Rapeseed— 2.8 million tons

Oil flax – about 1.3 million tons.

Compared to the 2021/2022 season, the increase should be 13%.

Sunflower is the most traditional Russian crop, the production center of which was even pre-revolutionary Russia.

With the expansion of the geography of growing crops around the world, the Russian region remained among the dominant ones.

In the 2021/2022 season, Ukraine took the first place in world sunflower production — about 30%.

Russia was narrowly in second place with 27% of global crop production.

But Russia is a confident leader in the production of sunflower oil.

On average, over the past five years, Russia has exported sunflower products (sunflower seeds, sunflower oil and sunflower cake) worth $2.6 billion.

Last year, this figure reached almost $3.6 billion, which was primarily due to global price increases.

Over the past ten years, the world production of sunflower oil has increased by 1.6 times (up to 19.5 million tons), and consumption — by 1.53 times.

The oil and fat industry of Russia ensures domestic consumption of various types of sunflower oils by 200%: the average consumption over the past five years is 2.4 million tons.

Given the expectation of a high yield for almost all types of oilseeds and large carry-overs for sunflower, in the 2022/2023 season, the domestic oil processing industry will cover the needs of Russians by 300%.

According to analysts, about 9 million tons of vegetable oils will be produced, which is 26% more than the 2021/2022 season.

Given that domestic consumption averages 2.4 million tons, more than 6 million tons can be exported.

Russian analysts believe that the volume of oil and fat products sold abroad will grow by 35%.

Given that there is a lot of competition in the vegetable oil market, export restrictions become very sensitive.

From April 15 to August 31, 2022, a quota was set for the export of sunflower oil in the amount of 1.5 million tons, cake — 0.7 million tons.

On July 16, 2022, the quota was increased by 400 thousand tons and 150 thousand tons, respectively.
