Syngenta, Bayer and BASF top the top 20 PPP manufacturers

Information portal AgroPages has published a list of the 20 largest producers of CPP (plant protection products).

The top 20 is based on 2021 data.

Their total volume amounted to $72 billion. This is an increase of 19% compared to the previous year.

Syngenta

The top is headed by the Swiss company Syngenta, it has about 50,000 employees in 90 countries. In addition to plant protection products, it produces seeds and GMO plants. Active in the US, China and the UK.

In 2021, Syngenta’s pesticide sales grew by 19% to $13.3 billion, primarily due to competent supply chain management.

Bayer CropScience

It is a division of the giant German pharmaceutical company Bayer. It also produces pesticides and other plant protection products.

The company’s revenue for 2021 grew by 14.5% and amounted to $11.4 billion. This was achieved not least due to high prices, although sales volumes also grew.

BASF

This German chemical giant produces, among other things, plant protection products and seeds. The main sales are made in the USA, Germany and Brazil.

In 2021, the company showed a 10% increase in revenue, to $7.7 billion, even the high volatility of exchange rates did not prevent it from getting such an impressive result.

True, it is not yet clear whether BASF will be able to show the same brilliant results for 2022: due to the energy crisis, in particular the lack of cheap gas — the main raw material — the management is thinking about reducing production.

“Stopping production would be a colossal task. We have never encountered such a situation before. It is hard to imagine. This is an extreme scenario that we would very much like to avoid,” said BASF Senior Economist Peter Westerheide.

Also, the American company Corteva got into the top 20 major manufacturers of plant protection products.

The four companies mentioned above collectively earned 55% of the top 20’s total revenue.

Not without Chinese companies: in the top 20, as many as 12 positions belong to them, and in total they earned $ 29 billion in 2021, which is 40% of the total revenue of all companies from the top 20.

At the same time, there are newcomers on the list: for example, Fuhua and Hebang companies.

They cannot boast of the same impressive revenue volumes as the first 4 giants, but they have impressive revenue growth rates: 87-126% per year.

As a result, it is possible that a similar top for 2022 may differ markedly from this one.
