China is going to use the Xinjiang region as an important base to ensure the country’s food security.
The Xinjiang region is the largest in area in the PRC, although a significant part of it is made up of terrain that is not very suitable for agriculture: deserts and mountains.
However, it was decided to create a grain granary in this region in order to significantly increase wheat production in this area.
In particular, there are plans to increase the area under traditional wheat, as well as to sow special varieties, including those with a high selenium content.
This season, the grain production plan in the Xinjiang region has been further increased. This time the increase was 1 million tons, with total production expected to be around 20 million tons.
In this case, the focus is on constantly increasing grain yield. In particular, this season it is planned to increase grain yields by 1.5% and corn by 3%.
It is planned that the resulting harvest will be used by both the food industry and livestock farmers, not only in this region, but throughout the country.
At the same time, an important distinctive feature of agriculture in Xinjiang will be the active use of modern technologies.
In addition to increasing yields as one of the main goals, emphasis will be placed on the production of high-gluten wheat and other specialty varieties.
As for corn, it is planned to grow varieties for both silage and grain.
Finally, the Xinjiang region could become one of the sites where new technologies will be tested before scaling them to other areas of the country.
Among other things, it is planned to carry out extensive work on selection, and at the same time increase the construction of grain storage facilities, as well as build 100 centers and more than 3,000 enterprises and points of the “emergency grain support” fund for harvest storage.
In general, there are plans to make Xinjiang one of the leading regions of China in terms of crop production in the foreseeable future, this is part of a global strategy to ensure the country’s food security and reduce its dependence on imports.
Over the past year, about 700 million tons of grain were harvested in China, which is currently a record value.
At the same time, this season the grain harvest is planned at about 650 million tons, since, according to experts, repeating last year’s record will not be so easy.
