US GMO corn exports to expand

The United States has won a lawsuit against Mexico and Canada, which considered American genetically modified corn to be a dangerous product.

On December 20, the United States managed to challenge in court the measures that Mexico took to restrict the import of GMO corn produced in the United States.

All of these measures were found to have no scientific basis. American officials argue against this background that Mexico’s approach ignored much evidence of the safety of such a crop.

Now American exporters will have full access to the Mexican market.

It is emphasized that the victory of American GMO corn in Mexico could be an important step for its further distribution.

At the same time, the widespread use of such a product could help many poor countries feed their populations, since modified corn has a higher yield compared to regular corn, and is also less susceptible to various negative factors, such as pests and diseases.

It is noted that the conclusions about the safety of American corn were made by experts of the USMCA, that is, an association that includes the United States, Canada and Mexico.

In this regard, the implementation of the decision of this body is mandatory for Mexico.

And if so, then within 45 days this country must comply with the order and open its market to GMO corn from the United States.

At the same time, Mexico is the largest sales market for American agricultural products, and in particular corn.

According to available data, from January to October of this year, the United States exported corn to Mexico worth about 5 billion dollars, so this is the largest sales market for American farmers.

If GMO is added to regular corn, this can significantly expand the volumes, experts believe.

Interestingly, the reason for the dispute was the ban of the President of Mexico on the use of GMO corn in dough and tortillas, as well as the decree to gradually stop its use in other products, including animal feed.

The basis for such a policy was concerns about the safety of such a product, as well as, possibly, the desire to protect its market.

Mexico has not yet commented on its further actions regarding the implementation of the USMCA order.

However, if it wants to remain a full member of this association, it will be difficult for it to find reasons not to comply with it, experts believe, so the opening of the Mexican market to American GMO corn is very likely in the near future.
