Sunflower and oil prices are falling in Russia

The beginning of the year was marked by an active decline in prices for sunflower oil, while the cost of sunflower decreased less significantly.

According to the latest data, sunflower oil has become significantly cheaper in Russia. Currently, it is traded in the European part of the Russian Federation at 84,000-84,500 rubles per ton.

The decrease was about 6,500-8,000 rubles per ton. Export prices have remained virtually unchanged and are now around $1,045 per ton.

As for sunflower, its cost has decreased less actively. It has become cheaper by about 500-1,000 rubles per ton and now costs about 35,000-39,000.

Depending on the region, sunflower prices can vary significantly.

For example, according to analysts, the most expensive sunflower is now in the Voronezh region, where they are asking 42,400 rubles per ton, and in the Altai region you will have to pay much less — 30,000 rubles.

This largely depends on the proximity to export routes, such as sea ports, as well as to production sites, that is, fields, and stocks in warehouses in a particular region, as well as on the balance of supply and demand.

It is interesting that the dynamics of changes in sunflower prices remains multidirectional.

For example, in the central part of Russia, as well as in the Volga region and Siberia, a decrease was observed over the past week, while in the North Caucasus Federal District prices remained stable, and in the southern regions an increase could be noted.

Experts attribute the general decline in oil prices to the fact that its quotes are actively falling on world markets today.

Accordingly, this also causes a decrease in the cost of raw materials, that is, the seeds from which this oil is produced.

The second factor is the upward revision of sunflower harvest forecasts.

This means an increase in supply, which always implies that prices will fall. The expectation of an increase in supply, in addition, forced farmers to sell their stocks more actively.

Finally, the increase in the export duty by more than 1.7 times made the sale of sunflower and oil abroad much less profitable, which increased their supply on the domestic Russian market, thereby causing a decrease in prices.

At the same time, farmers assume that the export duty will continue to grow, increasing by 20% at an exchange rate of 99.6 rubles per dollar.

Moreover, the growth of the ruble itself is also likely, which will only strengthen the protective effect of the duty. Therefore, we can expect a further increase in supply on the domestic market and a further decrease in prices.
