According to the latest data, Egypt has managed to push Turkey aside and become the undisputed leader in terms of wheat purchases from Russia.
According to experts, Turkey has purchased about 2.3 million tons of wheat this season.
It is noted that this is almost half as much as for the same period last season. Thus, Turkey has dropped to third place in the list of importers of Russian wheat.
Moreover, today’s figures are the lowest in the last 8 years: in the 2016-2017 season, shipment volumes amounted to 1.8 million tons.
In all previous years, Turkey has consistently occupied either first or second place in terms of wheat exports from the Russian Federation.
However, the current state of affairs is not surprising, because since July 21 last year, this country itself has imposed restrictions on wheat imports, as a result of which the figures have inevitably dropped.
Due to the changes that have occurred, Egypt has risen to first place in the list of importers of Russian grain. It is noted that from July to January it imported about 6.3 million tons, which is about 1.7 times higher than a year earlier.
Bangladesh confidently holds second place, where 2.3 million tons were sent. It should be noted that this is slightly less than in the previous agricultural year: then Bangladesh bought 2.49 million tons of Russian wheat.
Algeria is currently in fourth place, after Turkey. There is also a positive trend there: if in the previous agricultural year it purchased 1.6 million tons of wheat, then in the current one it has purchased about 1.69 million tons.
Finally, Kenya is in fifth place. It has purchased 1.4 million tons of wheat this year, while in the previous season this figure was 1.06 million tons. Thus, we can talk about a very significant increase in Kenya.
Analysts note that in general, the volume of Russian wheat exports since the beginning of this season amounted to 32.2 million tons.
This is 400 thousand tons more than in the same period last season, when 31.8 million tons were exported.
However, despite the good figures at the beginning of the year, some experts predict that in general, the figures for wheat exports from the Russian Federation in the current season may, albeit slightly, fall.
The reason for this may be low wheat reserves in the south of Russia and in the center, while high reserves are currently only available beyond the Urals, from where exports are significantly complicated.
In addition, low world prices for wheat and high duties are reducing the activity of exporters.
