Russia Increases Agricultural Exports to Africa

Analysts note that in 2024, the volume of agricultural supplies from Russia to Africa increased by 19% compared to the previous year.

According to the latest data, last year Russia sold agricultural products to Africa worth about $7 billion.

At the same time, the number of countries on the African continent that purchase food from the Russian Federation is quite large: about 45 states.

In other words, almost all of Africa is on the list of active importers of food products from Russia, which can be considered a very significant achievement.

Egypt remains in first place, as in previous periods. In monetary terms, the volume of supplies to this country increased by 45% over the past year, experts note.

In addition to the fact that this state actively purchases Russian wheat, it also leads in the volume of supplies of many other types of products. In particular, these include sunflower and soybean oils, legumes, flax, yeast and many other types of agricultural products.

In addition to Egypt, many other African countries are also actively buying Russian food products.

For example, these are Algeria, Libya, Kenya and Tunisia. The last two countries increased their purchases of agricultural products from the Russian Federation by about 30% during 2024.

In general, African countries are currently a significant buyer of Russian wheat, their share in exports is growing and is already becoming quite significant.

“In the 2023/2024 season, 21.2 million tons of wheat were delivered to African countries, which is 38% of the total volume of wheat exports from Russia and is a record figure.

For comparison, in the 2022/2023 season, 17.6 million tons were exported to this continent, and in 2021/2022 — 10.6 million tons.

In general, over the past five years, the share of African countries has remained at about 40%, with the exception of the 2022/2023 season, when it dropped to 35%,” notes Igor Pavensky, head of agricultural market analysis at Rusagrotrans.

It is planned that in the season that has begun, the share of African countries in the total volume of Russian agricultural exports may already be 50%.

This growth is associated with an increase in the volume of deliveries to a number of African countries, including, in addition to those listed above, Tanzania, Mozambique, Morocco, and Ethiopia.

Experts believe that Africa is a promising export destination due to the rapid growth of the population and standard of living.

If Russia conquers this market now, then in the future it can bring in more and more income with an increase in sales volumes, experts are sure.
