Russian farmers are increasingly using insurance as a way to protect themselves from natural disasters

To date, the area of insured crops has exceeded 15 million hectares, which is almost a record value.

Insurance is gradually gaining popularity among Russian farmers. As of August 1, 2025, the total area of insured crops in 72 regions exceeded 15 million hectares.

Agricultural producers are most willing to resort to such a tool as insurance in the Rostov, Krasnodar and Stavropol regions.

At the same time, the reason why these regions of the Russian Federation are leaders in this area is clear. The southern regions more often than others have to face unfavorable weather conditions that can destroy almost the entire crop, primarily drought.

For example, in the Rostov region, they are currently going to introduce a federal emergency regime due to the lack of precipitation and moisture reserves in the soil.

«Rostov Region has applied to the Russian Emergencies Ministry with a request to introduce federal emergency regimes in the region for the natural and climatic factors of «freezing» and «soil drought,» the governor’s administration notes.

Experts warn that climate change may contribute to such natural phenomena occurring more and more often in the future. This threatens huge losses for producers.

In the current situation, it is quite logical that they resort to insurance, seeing it as almost the only way to protect against financial losses.

At the same time, experience shows that this tool really works well. For example, farmers in Rostov Region received payments of 1.5 billion rubles in the first half of the year, Krasnodar Region — 1.3 billion, Stavropol Region — 500 million.

It is interesting that the «multi-risk» protection program, which includes insurance against a large number of adverse weather events, was most popular among farmers from Rostov Region. It insured 900 thousand hectares.

In addition, many companies use emergency insurance: 300 thousand hectares. If the emergency regime is really introduced in this region, it will mean that all of them will receive payments.

In general, the statistics for recent years are disappointing for many agricultural producers from the southern regions of the Russian Federation.

For example, in the Rostov region this year about 1 million hectares of crops were lost or damaged, as a result of which the yield significantly decreased.

In such a situation, insurance remains one of the few options for companies to stay afloat after losses.
