Container shipping in Russia is actively developing

This applies to both seaports and increased investment in rail container transportation.

Several of the largest seaports in Russia have taken serious steps to work with containers.

The Sea Terminal of the Eastern Stevedoring Company in Primorye switched to container cargo in September, completely ceasing to be engaged in coal transshipment.

Vostochny port in Primorye began accepting containers this year.

Nakhodka port also switched to work with them, since neighboring ports cannot cope with the high load.

In the Vladivostok Commercial Sea Port it is planned to create a transport and logistics hub «Vostochny», focused on working with containers.

TransContainer is currently modernizing the Zabaikalsk terminal (located on the Russian-Chinese border).

Sea transportation or Russian Railways?

Not so long ago, the lion’s share of container cargo was transported exclusively by sea.

But today both Russian Railways and the shippers themselves are beginning to show great interest in containers, for which sea transportation is becoming too expensive.

For example, this summer a container railway terminal was opened in Sochi, which is capable of unloading one train per day.

It is planned that transport and logistics centers will also appear in Yekaterinburg and Primorye in the near future.

«Container shipments by rail are increasing, including through Russia, the load on terminals is growing, and problems with the reception and handling of container ships are increasing in the Far East,» said Vladimir Savchuk, Deputy Director of the Institute for Natural Monopolies.

Significant investments come from transport companies.

For example, next year Transcontainer plans to invest up to 20 billion rubles in a container and wagon fleet.

“With regard to investments in the fleet of containers, wagons, our company annually spends about 15 billion rubles on investments in this equipment. This year, even the investments were higher. Next year, we also plan about 20 billion rubles, «- said First Vice President of the company Viktor Markov.

China is becoming a driver of container transportation development, increasing the flow of containerized cargo.

According to Victor, working with such cargo is promising, since the segment is growing rapidly and is of great interest for cooperation with partners in the Asia-Pacific region.
