Brief analysis of the dynamics of the turnover of the Novorossiysk port from 07 to 13 February 2022 (week 6)

Data from the analytical platform Logistic OS.

Last week, tensions around the geopolitical situation between Russia and Ukraine intensified, which pushed the price of wheat futures up.

But, at the moment, the cost of grain is below the November figures — the peak values since 2012.

The fears of market participants are primarily related to the fact that Russia and Ukraine are the two main grain exporters.

Russia and Ukraine account for almost a third of wheat and barley exports and a fifth of corn exports.

Grain cargoes, which play a key role in ensuring world food security, pass through the ports of the Black Sea.

Increased tensions between the two main suppliers of grains to the world market could lead to a global rise in food prices, which have risen to their highest levels in the last decade.

According to analytical data, in January, export shipments from Russia decreased by 48% compared to the same period in 2021.

Export prices for wheat with 12.5% protein fell $7 to $316 per tonne FOB last week at Russian deep water ports.

In the domestic market, demand is relatively low, which was accompanied by a decrease in prices (the average price is indicated without VAT, the European part of Russia):

Grade 3 wheat – RUB 15 050/t (- 150 rubles)

Grade 4 wheat – 14 975 rubles/t (- 175 rubles)

Grade 5 wheat – 14 475 rubles/t (-125 rubles).
