For a long time, Iran had enough of its own wheat, and in Russia this crop was purchased for processing and temporary import (wheat was processed and flour was sold to Afghanistan and Iraq).

But the drought and shortage of its own wheat, increased pressure from the US in the form of unilateral sanctions and reduced cooperation with European and Asian companies have become one of the factors behind the increase in shipments from Russia.

Another factor is Iran’s temporary agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union, which entered into force on October 27, 2019, leading to the formation of a free trade area.

As a result, in 2021, the supply of wheat and meslin from Russia to Iran increased by 6.3 times.
