Container shipping sector makes super profits

Over the past seven quarters, the profit of the container transportation sector has updated records every time.

And the growth hasn’t stopped yet. For example, in the 2nd quarter of 2022, it amounted to almost $64 billion.

This is 123% more than in the same period last year. And compared to the first quarter of 2022, we have a noticeable increase of $5 billion.

All this suggests that the results for the year will also please: a total of about $ 245 billion is expected, which is 65% more than last year.

Will the growth last?

On the one hand, it has already been going on for almost two years. On the other hand, it is obvious that it cannot be infinite, especially at such rates.

There are many factors that will prevent the container shipping sector from developing further:

Reduction in traffic

The most interesting thing is that it is already happening. For example, in the second quarter, the volume of container traffic decreased by 1.6% compared to the same period last year.

However, compared to the previous quarter, it has grown. At present, container transportations occupy about 30% of the entire water transportation market.

Fleet increase for shipping companies

Today they, receiving superprofits, are anxious to spend this money wisely. First of all, we are talking about the construction of new ships, the replacement or repair of existing ones, as well as the modernization of port infrastructure.

For example, the CEO of the well-known company Hapag-Lloyd, Rolf Hubben Jansen, intends to dispose of the funds received in this way.

Already, the company has ordered more than 20 new vessels, which in total will have to increase its cargo transportation capacity by a quarter. All this reduces the shortage of supply and logically leads to lower rates.

The container transportation market in Russia may fall by 15%

The FESCO transport group gives just such a forecast. The reasons for the fall may be a violation of supply chains, as well as the departure of a number of companies from the Russian Federation: both manufacturers and buyers and suppliers.

At the same time, Andrey Severilov, chairman of the board of directors of the group, predicts that not only the Russian, but also the global container transportation market is expected to fall this year.

True, the global market will not sink so much: about 2%.

Severilov noted that due to the geopolitical situation, the volume of cargo in the northern and western Russian ports has fallen sharply, but in the eastern ports, the load has increased sharply.

However, so far it has been possible to cope with it, and such collapses as a year ago, when “traffic jams” and delays in loading / unloading were observed in the Far Eastern ports, are currently not and are not expected.
