Demand for used farm equipment is on the rise

This trend is observed not only in Russia, but throughout the world. Moreover, along with demand, the price also increases significantly.

Currently, agricultural machinery manufacturers are actively introducing new technologies into their products: for example, many sensors, cameras and monitors, GPS, artificial intelligence.

However, the demand of farmers for such equipment is not too high, contrary to expectations. And the reasons are pretty obvious:

— this technique is expensive

— new features are not so necessary

— equipment with high-tech “stuffing” is very difficult to repair and requires specialized personnel for operation

As a result, farmers are increasingly choosing not new “tractors of the 22nd century”, but used equipment, which is up to several decades old.

It is much simpler and more familiar, cheaper compared to the “tricked out”, and the producers of agricultural products have already learned how to repair many models practically on their own.

At the same time, some companies that produce equipment seem to deliberately behave in such a way that they refuse it. For example, the American John Deere for a long time did not want to provide customers with repair tools.

What is happening on the agricultural machinery market in Russia?

Domestic agricultural producers have another rather serious problem, namely, a decrease in income, which occurred due to a combination of several factors.

Including, this is a decrease in grain prices and export duties, which do not allow to receive significant proceeds from the sale of their products abroad.

This was imposed both on anti-Russian sanctions and on the withdrawal of foreign brands from the Russian Federation, many of which provided agricultural equipment.

All this has led to a shortage in this market, in connection with which the demand for used equipment has increased.

According to Avito, in February, demand jumped 2.6 times compared to January. This also applies to grain cleaners, and potato planters, and reapers, and sprayers.

At the same time, the used equipment market is limited in volume, so the growth in demand inevitably caused an increase in prices.

The same thing is happening in the USA.

This June, used agricultural equipment has risen in price by about 12% compared to last June, and harvesters — over 40%.

At the same time, the number of ads for sale has grown by more than 80%, but the market still remains “narrow”, farmers say: everyone will not be able to purchase everything he needs, this increases competition and accelerates prices.

Against this background, the prospects for the development of the agricultural sector are becoming more doubtful. Perhaps manufacturers of equipment should start releasing models that were in use a couple of decades ago?
