Brazil is preparing for a record harvest

After a decline in 2021, for the second season in a row, Brazil shows very good results in the agricultural sector.

In total, Brazil is projected to harvest about 318 million tons of major crops. This is approximately 21% more than what was collected last year, which is a very good result.

Last season, Brazilian farmers managed to harvest about 263 million tons of crops, if we combine grains, legumes and oilseeds.

In total, it is planned to harvest from 78 million hectares, which is also more than last season: then this figure was 6% less.

It is expected that the soybean harvest this time will be 26% more than last year, cotton – 12%, sorghum – 43%, corn – 20%, wheat – 5%. For rice, a slight decline of 5% is expected.

Together, rice, corn and soybeans account for 92% of Brazil’s total harvest. Thus, these are the main crops that are grown in this country.

“We had a record for the gross grain harvest, as well as for the yields of corn, soybeans, sorghum, cotton seeds and, perhaps, there will be a wheat record if the weather cooperates.

Now we can say that corn, soybeans, sorghum and cotton have already secured the record,” said Carlos Barradas, manager of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics IBGE.

Among the reasons that made it possible to achieve record harvest values for the second year in a row, Barradas cited favorable weather conditions, as well as the opportunity to harvest a double harvest.

As for wheat, its harvesting should begin in November.

Since this crop is very sensitive to changes in weather conditions, it is still difficult to predict what exactly the harvest will be, but farmers hope that it will not be lower than predicted. And perhaps even higher.

Brazil increases imports of wheat from Russia

As you can see, wheat is not among the top crops actively grown in Brazil. Therefore, this country is actively engaged in importing this crop.

Recently, procurement has been actively carried out from Russia.

For example, in September, Brazil imported about 250 thousand tons of wheat from the Russian Federation, which also became a record.

The previous record was observed in December 2022: then Brazil purchased about 220 thousand tons of grain from Russia.

At the same time, according to data for September, Russia became the main exporter of wheat to Brazil, overtaking Argentina and Uruguay.

In addition to the fact that the countries are actively cooperating within the BRICS framework, this could be facilitated by the fact that the Russian Federation is ready to offer favorable prices due to the high stocks of wheat that it has accumulated after two years in a row with good harvests.
