Siberia increases grain exports

According to statistics, in July-October of this year, about 1.3 million tons of grain were exported from Siberian regions, which is 200 thousand tons more than in the same period last year.

Experts note that the export of agricultural products from Siberia is now very active, with about 41 countries among buyers, although a year ago there were only 32.

In particular, new routes are laid every year. For example, this year, supplies of barley to Latvia, sunflower to China and Mongolia, and oats to Uzbekistan began for the first time.

The leader is the Altai Territory, accounting for up to 38% of the total volume of shipments of Siberian agricultural products abroad.

The export of not only grain, but also legumes, oilseeds and their processed products is growing.

China becomes leading importer

Barley and peas have become one of the main crops for which exports to China are actively growing. This October, pea exports to China increased fourfold.

In total, peas are now exported to 14 countries; in total, about 180 thousand tons were exported from Siberian regions during July-October this year, which is 5 times more than during the same period in 2022.

China is also actively buying corn and soybeans, wheat and oats.

The prospects for cooperation with China in the agricultural sector are very broad. As it recently became known, China included 590 Russian companies in the list of suppliers.

As for peas, the first batch of this crop went to China in February 2023, this became possible after Russia and China agreed on phytosanitary rules that should be observed during deliveries, after which the Chinese market was open to Russian supplies.

Every year, China purchases approximately 2 million tons of peas, this is an excellent opportunity for Russian farmers, because there is a demand for this crop, which allows them to increase production many times over.

In addition to China, Türkiye, Spain, Italy and Denmark are now interested in Russian peas.

Necessary conditions for export development

One of the key factors that will determine the volume of grain exports in the near future is logistics.

Back in 2014, China pointed out the need to build elevators in Russia that would allow storing approximately 70 million tons of grain.

Then this project seemed fantastic, but now there are plans that by 2035 a system will be launched that will allow up to 29 million tons of grain to be exported to China annually.

Thanks to the construction of such infrastructure, Russian farmers are motivated to redirect their supplies to China.
