According to the latest data, in March, the volume of wheat exports from the Russian Federation decreased by 2.9 times compared to the same period last year.
In total, about 1.8 million tons were exported in March 2025. At the same time, in March 2024, the volume of supplies amounted to 5.1 million tons, experts note.
Thus, we see a very deep decline.
However, it is noteworthy that this is still not as bad a result as it could have been: initially, the forecast for March was only 1.6 million tons, but more active export rates in the last 10 days of March made it possible to reach at least 1.8 million.
In general, if we talk about exports during the entire 2024-2025 season, it has amounted to about 36 million tons to date.
How is the price of Russian wheat changing?
Currently, we are seeing price growth dynamics.
If a month ago a ton of wheat cost about 250 dollars, now it is traded much higher: about 253 dollars.
At the same time, it is noteworthy that competitors, as a rule, are ready to offer more favorable conditions for the buyer.
For example, French wheat is currently trading at 237 dollars per ton, and American wheat has even fallen in price from 238 dollars per ton to 227 dollars.
“Both at the beginning of March and at the end, we note the absence of a discount in the price of Russian wheat in relation to European wheat.
That is, on April 1, the cost of Russian wheat is higher than the price of French wheat by $16. On March 1, it was $13.
I think that this is one of the reasons for the decrease in shipments,” says Elena Tyurina, a representative of the Russian Grain Union.
Which countries are buying Russian wheat today?
At the moment, grain from the Russian Federation goes to 21 countries. And here we are also dealing with a very significant reduction, since a year ago there were 41 states on the list of such countries.
Among the main suppliers is Egypt, which bought 300 thousand tons of wheat. However, in March 2024 this figure was much higher: 1.4 million tons.
In addition, such countries as Bangladesh and Sudan made significant purchases. The first purchased 151 thousand tons (2.5 times less than a year ago), the second — 135 thousand tons against 121 thousand a year earlier.
Thus, for now, it is the high prices for Russian wheat that can be considered the main factor that hinders its active export.
Only after the quotes go down, can we expect that export figures will increase, most experts are confident.
