Russia could set a record for pea production

According to experts, high levels of pea production could pose problems for farmers, as they will lead to a significant drop in prices.

According to the latest data, the pea harvest this year could reach approximately 5.4 million tons.

This is a significant increase compared to 2024, when approximately 3.8 million tons were harvested.

Experts emphasize that this impressive result was achieved despite extremely negative performance in the Rostov Region, a key pea-growing region.

In 2025, the harvest there was more than half of the usual levels.

However, thanks to growth in other key producing regions, the overall picture looks positive.

For example, the Stavropol Territory plans to harvest 750,000 tons of peas this season, 260,000 more than in the previous season.

The Nizhny Novgorod Region is expected to produce 280,000 tons, with an annual increase of 175,000.

Novosibirsk farmers are expected to harvest approximately 290,000 tons, more than double the previous year’s total.

At the same time, analysts note that such a significant increase in pea production will likely impact prices.

Since peas are a niche crop, this will be particularly noticeable. Domestic consumption of peas is extremely limited, and advanced processing of legumes is also underdeveloped.

As a result, the harvest will have to be largely exported as raw material. This does not promise high profits for producers.

In previous years, legume prices on the global market were quite high, which largely explains farmers’ enthusiasm for pea cultivation.

However, they will now face competition, as many other countries have also harvested a good pea crop this season and are ready to export their produce.

At the same time, the quality of Russian products sometimes lags behind competitors, which further limits export opportunities.

Finally, intense competition in the global market will likely drive prices down, which will be detrimental to all exporting countries, including Russia.

Experts note that in the first nine months of 2025, China, India, and Pakistan were the largest buyers of peas from Russia.

Additionally, Bangladesh, Turkey, the UAE, and Egypt are among the significant importers.

At the same time, exporters plan to expand this list, in particular by working more actively with African countries.
