The retail and wholesale food markets in Russia are demonstrating dynamics atypical for mid-summer, forcing analysts to reconsider classic seasonal inflation models.
Instead of the usual July price cooling, the sector is recording a systematic increase in prices for the basic set of products.
According to recent calculations by the Rusprodsoyuz association, the total cost of the minimum monthly food basket in the country has increased by 3.99% since the beginning of the year. The calculation matrix includes 33 items — from bread, meat and milk to seasonal vegetables.
Regional contrasts and dynamics of the “borscht set”
The association’s statistics reveal a colossal geographic polarity of prices within the country, due to the logistics accessibility of the regions.
Remote territories traditionally stand out as absolute price anti-records: in Chukotka, the cost of the minimum set broke the mark of 20,432 thousand rubles, and in the Kamchatka Territory it was fixed at 13,397 thousand rubles.
In the capital region and St. Petersburg, indicators are kept in the range of 9–9.2 thousand rubles.
The most affordable food turned out to be for residents of Mordovia (6.28 thousand rubles) and the Saratov region (6.475 thousand rubles).
In parallel, operational data from Rosstat indicate continued inflationary pressure: the consumer price index in the last week of June added 0.22%, and the overall increase since the beginning of the year reached 4.17%.
This is noticeably faster than the same period last year, when the figures were 0.20% and 3.77%, respectively.
The main driver of the weekly price increase are items from the so-called “borscht set”:
White cabbage — a rise of 4.67%;
Potatoes — growth by 4.54%;
Onions — plus 3.8%;
Beetroot and carrots added 3.22% and 2.53%.
So far, only cucumbers (-5.66%), chicken eggs (-2.1%) and tomatoes (-1.77%) act as a restraining counterbalance.
Fuel “scissors”: why the classical laws of the market do not work
Analysts believe that the current increase in the price of root crops is a temporary phenomenon associated with the specifics of the transition period: the mass harvest of middle and late varieties in Russia has not yet started, so the shelves are dominated by imported products, which have become more expensive due to the weakening of the ruble.
However, the key challenge of the season does not lie in the volume of the harvest. Mass harvesting in the south of Russia has already begun and the domestic market is guaranteed to be supplied with domestic vegetables.
The problem is that the positive contribution of increasing fees will be completely offset by logistics costs.
The main pro-inflationary trigger was a sharp jump in the cost of motor fuel: during the reporting week, diesel prices rose by 2.2%, and gasoline by 1.6%.
Experts are unanimous: this force majeure breaks the usual schedule of summer price declines. Perishable seasonal goods require the fastest possible delivery from the southern regions of production to the northern zones of consumption.
The logistics leverage, under the pressure of new prices for fuels and lubricants, is rapidly becoming more expensive, being included in the final cost of products.
If the situation on the fuel market does not stabilize in the next month and a half, farmers and retailers will definitely not have to count on summer deflation this year.
Conclusions for agribusiness
The current situation poses tough conditions for market operators. Simply relying on high yields no longer guarantees margins.
Greenhouse farms operating without additional lighting and open ground in the Volga region and the South are able to reduce production costs due to the sun and natural heat, increasing internal competition.
However, these technological advantages are lost during the transportation stage.
In the current realities, the key survival factor for large holdings is the optimization of transport chains, the development of their own network of regional distribution centers and the transition to long-term fuel contracts with a fixed price, allowing to hedge logistics risks.
