Today, the domestic agro-industrial complex has firmly established itself as a key driver of the economy.
In recent years, the sector has not only strengthened its position in the domestic market but has also radically transformed its standing on the global stage.
Large-scale exports and record grain harvests
Over the past 25 years, exports of domestic agricultural products have grown approximately 30-fold, reaching an impressive $41.6 billion by the end of 2025. Russia has moved definitively beyond its former status as an importer of basic foodstuffs, evolving into a major global player.
In crop production, the foundation has been consistent harvests: the country regularly produces over 100 million tons of grain, with the figure reaching approximately 142 million tons in 2025. This has enabled Russia to maintain a solid global lead in wheat exports.
Historic records in the meat and dairy sectors
The livestock sector has shown a significant leap forward, meeting the country’s domestic needs while expanding into new foreign markets. In 2025 alone, the poultry sector reached an all-time high, producing 7.3 million tons of meat.
Total exports of meat and offal have surpassed 700,000 tons, representing a 27% increase over the year. At the same time, the dairy sector is being revitalized: total milk production in 2025 reached approximately 34.2 million tonnes, with a notable surge in the output of high-value-added products, such as premium cheeses and butters.
A Breakthrough in Breeding, Genetics, and Import Substitution
Strengthening technological sovereignty and reducing reliance on foreign supplies has become a critical priority. The level of self-sufficiency in domestic seeds has risen to nearly 70% (up from 62.5% in 2023), while the availability of pedigree breeding stock for dairy cattle has increased from 65% to 80%.
The food and biotechnology industries have established the production of domestic frozen starter cultures, feed enzymes, and citric acid. Furthermore, the output of Russian-made veterinary vaccines has grown 1.7-fold, ensuring the biosafety of agricultural operations.
Smart Technologies and the Economics of Precision Farming
Modern agribusiness is inconceivable without the digitalization and robotization of production processes.
The deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) enables agronomists to reduce the use of plant protection products by up to 20%.
Meanwhile, intelligent robotic systems cut costs related to mineral fertilizers, fuel, and protective agents by roughly the same margin. This significantly boosts the profitability of agricultural enterprises and sets high standards for the continued technological advancement of the entire agro-industrial complex.
