Australia sets new records for grain exports

This season, Australia has achieved high levels of grain production and exports for the third time in a row, which is an important long-term trend.

In general, Australia showed an export record of 48 million tons for crops such as wheat, barley, rapeseed and sorghum.

This is about 11% more than in the previous season, when this figure was about 43 million tons. At the same time, it was possible to set new maximum sales volumes abroad for sorghum, rapeseed and wheat.

Such good export growth is facilitated by a large harvest, which, in turn, may have a climate factor as one of its reasons.

Experts talk about the beneficial influence of the warm ocean current La Niña; this factor can continue to ensure good harvest volumes.

Wheat

This crop brings in the most revenue — 66% of the total volume of grain exported from the country.

This year, the volume of wheat exports amounted to about 32 million tons, an increase of 16% compared to last season.

The main buyer of Australian wheat is China, accounting for about 24% of the total volume, or about 8 million tons. Also on the list of important buyers for this type of product are Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and South Korea.

Barley

Australia sells about 7 million tons of this crop, which is about 15% of total grain exports.

This year, barley became the only basic crop whose exports fell slightly compared to last season and amounted to 2 million tons.

The main buyer of barley from Australia is Saudi Arabia, its share is about 25%. Thailand, Vietnam and China are also actively acquiring this crop.

Rapeseed

Australia sells it in volumes of about 6 million tons per year, which is about 13% of the country’s grain agroexports.

About half of the rapeseed is purchased by countries that are part of the European Union. Also among the major buyers of this type of product are Japan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Mexico.

Sorghum

The main buyer of sorghum produced in Australia is currently China, which purchases almost 90% of this crop.

Australian sorghum is also sent to countries such as Japan, Kenya and Sudan.

This year, the Australian agricultural sector exported about 3 million tons of sorghum, representing approximately 6% of total grain exports.

At the same time, if we compare the volumes of the current season with similar indicators of the previous one, sorghum exports increased during this period by approximately 26%.
