Currently, Russia is in third place in the world in terms of food supplies.
This was stated by the Minister of Agriculture Oksana Lut at the plenary session of the IX International Forum of the Financial University «New Economic Policy 2.0: from adaptation to a breakthrough». At the same time, she added, our country has serious potential to increase its leadership in this area.
Therefore, it is possible that over time it can rise to second place, and then to first. The main thing that is needed for this is to work with technology, the minister believes.
The most important achievement, according to Lut, is that Russia has now learned to independently produce all types of agricultural products that can be produced on its territory, taking into account the climatic features.
At the same time, the last year was far from the best in terms of production volumes.
The reason, in particular, was the late May frosts, due to which gardening companies in the central part of the country suffered.
Another problem was the drought in the southern regions, which was observed in many of them for most of the season. This was a painful blow to the harvest of both grain and oilseed crops.
However, if we look at the situation globally, it is impossible not to note that over the past 10 years, Russia has made a powerful breakthrough in terms of developing the agricultural sector, the minister notes.
The impetus for this development was largely the food embargo adopted in 2014, which limited the import of imported food into the territory of the Russian Federation, which became a powerful driver for the development of domestic production and ultimately turned the country from an importer into an exporter.
Interestingly, Oksana Lut called the Moscow region one of the most agricultural regions of the country.
Despite the far from favorable climate, the capital region managed to become a significant player in the agricultural market due to the large-scale use of technology.
Among other things, they are able to protect against many adverse weather conditions and minimize the damage they cause.
Russia is going to continue developing its agricultural exports, and one of its priority tasks is to increase the gap between imports and exports, the minister noted.
In particular, it is planned to produce more grain.
Experts expect that thanks to modern technologies, it will be possible to increase their production even in regions that are not the most favorable in terms of climate.
